Introduce yourself & the kind of business you run or services that you provide:
Hi, my name is Cheryce Edie-Lester. I’m a mom of two toddlers, a wife and I run an online business doing social media management, graphic and web designs as well as business coaching. My mission is to help as many mom entrepreneurs simplify biz processes and improve their social media & content creation strategies for growth and success.

How long have you been in business or providing these types of services?
I officially started my business back in 2019 when I had my first child, however, my experience goes some 6 years back, as I have always done freelancing prior.

Can you tell me about how you got started?
My motivation came from always wanting to be a mom who was around for her child and my 9-5 was very demanding which wouldn’t allow that. Therefore, I took the initiative to start putting things in place and started my business and I never looked back since.

What’s one thing you would do differently if you were to start over?
I would definitely be more firm in terms of setting boundaries with clients as well as to throw away perfectionism. What I find is that clients will be reaching out to you at any hour expecting a response and being someone big on customer service and thought I was doing an injustice not responding. I would respond and tend their needs. However, I learnt that had I set boundaries and enforce them then these clients would know to respect such. I had to dispel the myths that if I didn’t respond though it would be outside business hours, the client would feel disrespected or walk. Solving this issue is a matter of letting the clients know what to expect from the start.

As for perfectionism, it’s always better to perform imperfect action than perfect inaction. Being a perfectionist, you will find that it comes with delayed responses or action towards your own goals and this does limit your potential as well as your growth. I have seen how this has slowed my business growth and caused missed opportunities due to fear of not having things perfect.

What’s a new habit or routine that has improved your business?
Developing a growth mindset and learning to take inspection actions. Showing up irrespective of what is happening and being your authentic self. And again to set boundaries while protecting your inner peace and mental health.

How long did it take you to feel like you were making consistent income in your business?
2.5 years

What’s the biggest obstacle you’ve faced in building your business and how did you overcome it?
After battling postpartum depression, a lot of things came into perspective for me. I realized that I was my own competition and I kept getting in my own way. I limited myself in fear of what others might think, or not looking or feeling perfect, or even not enough to help others though I knew deep down I had a lot to offer. Here’s what I did: a deep dive and analyzed what I was doing wrong and with my mindset mentor at hand, I managed to channel those limiting beliefs into a growth perspective and started to do the things I have always wanted to do. For example, starting my YouTube channel and my coaching business. Taking actions that align with my goals, taking my 1-step closer to them each day.

What advice would you give to other women who are interested in freelancing?

Do not limit yourself to the idea of waiting for the perfect time, it is ok to start your journey at any time. The important things are:

  • That you have started
  • You know who you are speaking to (your audience)
  • You are ready to offer value to your audience
  • You are 1-step ahead of your audience
  • You are being true to yourself and set realistic goals while keeping your processes simple.
  • Don’t overthink or overcomplicate things.
  • That you celebrate wins whether it be small, medium, or large
  • That you maintain your inner peace & mental health
  • You cultivate a growth mindset
  • That you understand that it will not be easy but you are committed
  • That you take actions

As you go through your journey you will realize that it’s like an on-the-job-training, you won’t know everything, but being strategic, analytic, and consistent will get you the results you need to keep moving. After all, you are creating the life you want so guess what, don’t forget to embrace your journey and have fun.
